A blog for the updates, changes, excitements, and frustrations that come from modding the zdoom engine for ponies.
Also, some modding tutorials that may or may not be helpful.
It's definitely still an alpha. And the sprites are... something. When they're even there, that is.
But if you want to watch me running around for a lot longer than I should be, check out the videos below. The first is the .4 alpha, and the mod itself came with a link to alpha .6 so that's the second video.
It's still an alpha. But I think it's a good concept. He's got classes all lined up and everything, and the maps are nice and large and open. The Decorate lump has a lot of stuff in it. Most of the civilians are stealth monsters so that's good because 1) I hate stealth monsters and 2) it looks kindof cool to add other ponies to the atmosphere. kindof wish I could do something like that for raridoom
Maybe I'll take a break from this for a while, try my hand at Super Pinkie Pie next or something like that.
So I've been busy with organic chemistry and I haven't had a chance to work too much on Raridoom. But apparently I'm not the only one.
Equestria Gaming finally updated with a compilation post and while Open Beta 2 wasn't mentioned, Lemonade was. And in the top right corner of the image, it says 'Inspired by Raridoom.'
It's a mod for the Ultimate Doom and while I haven't played it yet (currently having a bit of an existential crisis over ochem), I'm planning on checking it out tomorrow, so watch for a video (unless it's too hard for me, in which case I'll pretend I never said that).
Spring term ends in about a week. If I pass ochem, I'll dedicate my time to finishing Open Beta 3 and get it done before the end of June. If I fail ochem... something else, probably. Idk.
but seriously how long can one mod be in development i mean really now
One day, she will be a small, sprited, pixellated final boss (I mean, that's not a spoiler, right? Everyone was expecting that, right?) but until then, enjoy some Queen Chrysalis in her full glory.
It's been pretty slow working (organic chemistry...) but it's coming along. I had someone named michael send me two emails' worth of bugs, so I'll be doing a little squashing this week (so shoutout to him).
I also have tried to make a few more maps, so at this rate, Open Beta 3 will have all of episode 1-3 done (aside from some cosmetic enhancements in the levels...) and maybe some of the beginning of episode 4. Maybe. Everyone likes a good slaughter map, right? Are those still a thing?
I want this as the splash page on raridoom. Would this or would it not psych you up for the game?
On an unrelated side note, I am retaking organic chemistry. For the third time. For those of you who do not believe that humans have souls, let me reassure you that we do; because mine is being forcibly crushed and then slowly and painfully drained from my body.
Yeah. Not much has been going on.
I really appreciate all of you who are sticking with me throughout all this. People can make games in months and I can't get my silly little mod done in years. But once summer term rolls around, there will be no more chemistry, so I'm giving a tentative release date for open beta (three? Wow, I've been gone for too long…) in early June.
As I've said before, it's just me working on this project. If I decide I don't feel like spriting something, it doesn't get sprited. If I feel like hammering out a few levels, it happens (more or less). Basically, it means that if I don't feel like working, nothing happens.
This is why I really love contributions. New contributions and ideas really get my mind working and fire up some motivation. Even anonymous ones on April Fool's Day posts with suspicious wording in the comment.
...ok, that's a bit of a lie. Being suspicious ("horsemeat"? Really?), I played the wad blind and recorded it and...
Well, I think I'm flattered. Disturbed, deeply and truly disturbed, of course; but mildly flattered.
The following video is not quite safe for work and contains vulgar language (mostly in text form), poor spriting, censored inappropriate spriting; loud noises, inappropriate noises, bogus noises; tasteless jokes, tasteless image choice, tastelessness in general; a Terry trap, and other various inappropriacies. Proceed at your own risk.
But that first level, though... Seriously. While waiting for the video to upload I checked it out in DoomBuilder and there are secrets and ammo and everything that I missed. There's a flamethrower in the lava in the middle, and there's a hidden rocket launcher in the room with the blue key.
Seriously, though. It's rather messed up. I've left it as unlisted.
Also in the video I mistakenly said the Carnevil texture came from Zandronum when it in fact came from Skulltag. I made this mistake because Skulltag died about the time I got into modding (June 2012) and Zandronumpicked up the baton, and since I don't play online, I mixed the two multiplayer projects up.
Also my heart was breaking because something so good went so crappy so fast.
bet you wish for the days when I didn't update as often huh I don't even know why I'm posting this
So what usually happens on this day is, I think of something, draw it (usually late), put it up; and then end up liking it enough to put it in the mod.
This year, I have skipped that step. Instead, I just put my idea in (it's a spriting thing, so it might take a while to get implemented) and played a map someone named Artem sent me almost a year ago. It's... something, that's for sure. It says Jadwick as the map name, but that's because E3M5 in the actual game is his map.
Anyway... Open Beta 3 is probably coming out sometime in June. I'm sorry I've been gone for so long; but Raridoom is still alive and kicking.
...well, punching, I suppose; but if I could figure out how to code a good rear kick as an altfire I'd definitely consider it.
This video was actually the product of my third take; my second I actually hit the wrong number and so I did a pistol-start playthrough of actual map E2M4. If you want to see that, I can upload that, too; but I did (accidentally) reveal a couple secret things so if you like finding those yourself don't look.
