The good news (for you) is that I'm sick and tired of feeling like I'm letting people down and being a slacker OP who never gets around to delivering, so I'm releasing Open Beta 2. Yep. Download it here. Everything you need is self-contained the .zip file; rarimusic is an additional wad with music in .mp3 format that I think add a lot to the game but also add a crapton of size to the file, so I split it. Just drag and drop rarity.wad to zdoom.exe and you'll be playing in no time (but don't forget to change your settings in-game; the default ones don't even allow mouselook).
Looking back, I'm pretty sure I promised it in June of last year, so, as usual, I'm a figurative day late and a dollar short; but hey, OP finally delivered. There's another couple of enemies I haven't sprited yet that will have to wait until episode three, I've used a couple of placeholder sprites (especially on the final boss), some of the levels are too light for my liking, I'm sure I'm missing a texture here and there, and I have a few other minor things (
Also looking back, it's kindof cool to see how far I've come. I've got old files from October 2012 and even further back. It's been a fun ride... and I'm just getting started.
I want your first impressions; I want to know what you think of the game. I've been lurking zdoom forums and it seems like pony stuff isn't exactly welcomed with open arms, but there are some people who believe it could work. Also, as far as I know, this is the first ever TC wad and not just pre-alpha version wads or sprite replacement MSPaint-a-hoof-over-doomguy's-hands stuff, so I guess we'll see.
tl;dr download open beta 2 here.
Well, I know what I'm going to be doing today. And possibly tomorrow, on a higher difficulty setting.
ReplyDeleteWhat? No twilicane? But it won the poll! D:
ReplyDeleteNo twilicane /yet/. I just haven't got around to spriting it yet; but it's coming.
DeleteWeird, the poll doesn't seem to be working. I guess I'll just comment and say that this was a really great mod.
ReplyDeleteI can see what you meant by episode 3 being harder. I ran out of ammo really quickly on the first mission, and had to clear out the entire train unarmed at 13% health. Rarity's signature sucker-punch worked surprisingly well.
So anyway, after an extensive playthrough, I have to say that this beta was well worth the wait. I'll probably come back to play it again soon!
I can't take credit for the train level; that's a leftover chex quest map. But I'm glad you liked it!
DeleteWoo! That's an impressive improvement from beta1.
ReplyDeleteSPOILERS BELOW:
2 Things I noticed;

In episode 1 - this wall you can jump through, don't know if it's intended and I don't know if you are supposed to have jump (or crouch) on, but later levels require them both.

In the first trixling level you are missing a lower texture on a lift, I believe its the first room off to the left.
Is E3M4 the other submitted map? I found mine at E3M5.
Again nice work, the maps flow together fairly well, don't drag on too long, and aren't too confusing.
As you progress through the game your mapping ability shows improvement. There are some solid maps in Episode 2.
Favorite bit: "King Sombra would approve." That little bit made that whole map great.

The first one is intentional (that light isn't just decoration). The second one was definitely not. Thanks for catching that.
DeleteYep.
Thanks! I'm always trying to improve.
I'm glad you caught that. I thought she delivered that line perfectly.
For a weird thing, there's an unused keycard with raindrops picture on it.
ReplyDeleteHow your wonder how I found this? Found it by mixing other WADS.
Care to explain when you are going to put the keycard into play?
It's in play already. It belongs to the secret level of episode three, E3M9.
DeleteBy the way, you missed a secret that wasn't marked in E3M4.
DeleteWere you intended to use that as a secret or something else?
Now I'm pretty aware about any differences that you have made and or missed some secrets like this one, this one secret in E1M2 the changeling picture, last beta you couldn't open up the door to it, today's beta you CAN open it and believe me, I tend to go back and look some details you may have missed. Also, what's with the changelings turning into potions after they get crushed by the door? Because that's not normal to my view. Normally there bodies disappear once they get crushed by the door.
DeleteThe cheese grater does have one problem, when you "GRATE" one of the changelings, the lighting tend to flicker every time you "GRATE" one of the changelings. In future levels this needs to be looked at, otherwise they will see everything with one little grate.
DeleteI'm not an expert on Doom WADs and I'm not very deep in the community but I'll list what stood out to me and hope my feedback helps in any small way possible, otherwise feel free to disregard me. Finally completed this on 'There Will Be Blood' difficulty, with a few exceptions of course. I unfortunately had to cheat on the Chex Quest levels, there's barely any ammo and I'm just terrible with melee combat but I'm pretty sure they're not intended to be there.
ReplyDeleteOther than that I really like the map layouts that you created, episode 2 and the playable bits of 3 had some really challenging and fun setups. I did however run into some glitched textures here and there that gave off the Hall of Mirrors effects as if you noclipped outside the walls. The most notable and jarring one was on E2M3 after raising and crossing the hidden bridge near the end, was the ceiling behind me supposed to come down on a giant portion of the level? I crossed that bridge and turned around to find nothing but an impassible Hall of Mirrors texture.
A minor problem also appeared on E3M4 with the 'stealth teleporting' staircase, I went up and down it a few times and it seems that it stops it's teleporting after so many uses. So I just end up ascending or descending into a dead end with no escape.
I love most of the enemy designs and enjoyed dealing with them appropriately, although it took me a few minutes to figure out what your Mancubus replacement was, I was surprised by sudden technology upgrade. If I had any complaints on the enemies I suppose that it would be the colors on your Baron of Hell changeling seems a little off with with it's colors(not sure if intentional) and that your great and powerful mastermind has a giant invisible collision box and missing it's death animation. But considering your blog post and that this is only Beta 2, you're most likely well aware of this.
As for the rest of the miscellaneous stuff, the Poison Joke power up is immensely fun even if it did confuse me as to what happened at first, maybe there should be a line of text just hinting as to what happens when you pick it up? Also the message for it wearing off takes quite a while to appear after the status is well over and done with. I have no idea what that Alicorn Amulet that I see on the final level of Episode 2 does, nor do I have any idea on how to get to it, but I'm probably not looking hard enough. Also can't seem to find a way to access the hidden levels without cheating, but once again I'm probably not looking hard enough for their triggers.(E3M9 is beyond evil)
All in all, I really like it so far and can't wait to see what you'll add to it. I'm especially curious as to what your Revenant and Arch-Vile replacements will be. I realize that this still has a quite a bit of progress before it's considered complete and out of Beta, and that most of the things I listed you're probably aware of. Good luck with this in the future and I hope my wall of text didn't bore you too much.
"I have no idea what that Alicorn Amulet that I see on the final level of Episode 2 does"
DeleteThe "Alicorn Amulet" you said acts just like the invincible power up...except its deflects other attacks off from you.
I have a problem with getting Raridoom to play as it always seems to go to Chex quest 3, now since everybody else has managed to play this without any incidents I was wondering if I missed a step somewhere?
ReplyDeletesome help would be appreciated.
What bahatumay said about drag and dropping.
DeleteMake sure you "hold down control" when you "start clicking items" before launch the WAD.
thanks mate I guess I was too excited to play this to read.
DeleteIs good, especially E3M9 (I like acrobatics levels, ones with high contrast or glowy lighting, and with position-based ("window-window") attacks like E1M3). E2M5 was great (that stained glass! catwalk battles!), and episode 3 levels had good wow factor.
ReplyDeleteI think that amount of enemies on lower difficulty was too much - that is, crowds of enemies. Also, towards the end of episode 1 when they became tiresome after E1M5, there were kind of a questions that never appeared while playing original Doom: "what's the goal of this infiltration? Is she there to save something, or it it revenge because there's nothing to save, or survival?" As there are no ponies in cages or clues about ponies throughout the game, then did she really help anything at all, or maybe she just was destroying everypony she knew after they were brainwashed because they became changelings?
So that's probably the most troublesome place - E1M6 and E1M7. E1M8 is good because of boss showing herself at the beginning.
When you start the game up, pick Read This! from the menu for a quick little intro. There's also a "Story So Far" blog post on the side bar here.
DeleteI know those screens. Everything that is said there, is that Chrysalis attacked Canterlot, stolen the Elements but picked SB instead of Rarity. Doesn't explain why she goes to the hive first.
DeleteStoory So Far, thought, yes, that helps.
